Alstroemeria

Alstroemeria, Inca Lily, Peruvian Lily, Alstro

Alstroemeria is a beautiful flower that represents fortune, devotion and friendship.

Alstroemeria comes in a wide variety of shades, including white, pink, red, orange, purple and yellow.

They are often two-toned and freckled, giving them a bit more depth and interest. A single stem has an average of four blooms, along with some great sword-shaped greenery that adds colour and volume.

They are very long-lasting flowers and can be purchased while still in bud stage.

How to care for Alstroemeria:

Following these steps will help increase alstroemeria vase life. You’ll also get longer lasting alstroemeria flower arrangements to enjoy.

  • Remove any leaves that will be below the water line of the vase. Also remove any excessive leaves just below the flowers as these have a tendency to turn yellow and make the arrangement look tired.
  • There are two methods of treating the flower stems for longevity:
    1. Cut 2cm off the bottom of the flower stems ends. Dip the cut ends of the stems into 5cm of just boiled water for 30 seconds. You will see air bubbles come out of the cut stem ends. Take care not to let the hot stem touch the flowers and leaves to avoid blackening caused by burning. Place the stems into lukewarm water to which a floral preservative solution has been added. Leave to drink for at least 30 minutes before arranging.
    2. While holding the stems underwater in a sink or under running water, cut about one inch off each stem with a sharp knife or shears. DO NOT let the newly cut end dry off before transferring it into another container.
  • Water to which a floral preservative solution has been added should be used to arrange fresh-cut alstroemeria flowers. Using it as recommended will provide additional days of vase life.
  • Display your fresh cut alstroemeria arrangements in a cool area out of direct sunlight and drafts.
  • Alstroemeria are thirsty flowers. It is important to ensure that the vase is full and add preservative solution as needed. If arranged in floral foam, be sure it is completely soaked, and the container is topped up daily.
